So last month at the jam I made a short speech about respect,if you were not there here is what I said-
Tonight I want to talk about Respect. A lot of people talk about respect in the b-boy community, they want to earn respect, they get mad cause somebody didn’t show respect. As I have watched the scene change over the past decade I think a lot of dancers don’t respect the scene or community itself so I wanted to share what respect means to me.
Respect starts with taking the time to learn the history behind the culture including the music and art that has influenced the dance. Understanding the events and times that propelled the dance to evolve and understanding that it is a culture and a dance not just a bunch of moves. Respect means appreciating the b-boys that started the scene, enough to learn the names of the moves you mimic and how they were developed. If you use other people’s moves and don’ t know where they came from or who created them it isn’t respectful to the time and work that person put into their dance.
Respect means having compassion for the people in the scene and understanding that your actions as a person effect everyone in that community. Respecting the culture means being unified as a community that appreciates each others differences and works together to educate the current and future generations.
Respect means looking at your motives. Are you here to look cool, get attention or money? Are you here only to take what you can from the scene or are you here to give back and make sure the scene moves forward and is preserved for the future?
Respect means paying attention to others and appreciating the sacrifices they have made to the community, understanding that if you only take what they have to offer and never give back then eventually there will be nothing left to take and nothing left to pass on………….After I said all of that, I went on to talk about the first time I met J-Rebel in a club in Toronto. Long story short,I didn’t sweat him to be in his crew. He didn’t try and battle me. We actually met and sat down and talked about the culture and the history of B-boying for at least two hours straight….mind you this is in 2000 in a club with great music, allot of good looking woman and lots of fun to be had. But we felt a need to talk about history and culture of breaking. I’m thankful for moments like this cause I learn allot in these exchanges. So I guess what I’m saying with all this is respect each other, learn the history of the dance and respect yourself and the culture.Educate yourself so you can educate the next generation.
So that was it,just wanted to share with you. I am very passionate about Hip Hop and B-Boying so I will be posting more of my thoughts on a regular basis. I have many other topics to cover and allot to say about B-Boying in general….stay tuned. Peace,Shane Depree
