When Shane and I first decided to start Verve Dance Studio we didn’t really discuss what that would mean or what the end result would look like. I guess we both had our visions and assumed that the other person was “seeing” the same thing, as we discussed practical pieces of how, more so than what.
Over the past eight years we have learned how to express ourselves better, prioritize the ideas that move us forward and work through the obstacles that could hold us back so we can just keep moving.
Last weekend as Battle @ Buffalo- Under the Lights 3 came to end, I looked across the crowd of Buffalo natives and out of town guests and felt the energy of the moment. It was the energy of a movement.
A movement as defined by google, “a group of people working together to advance their shared political, social, or artistic ideas” and what I saw on Saturday was exactly that. Verve Dance Studio, Battle @ Buffalo, Under the Lights is no longer about Shane and I and our vision of a hip hop, b-boy/girl scene in Buffalo. It is no longer about a community of people supporting local dancers or providing a place for new dancers to learn and grow.
It is now a movement, an entity of it’s own, that is evolving and growing and being shaped by everyone that comes to the studio and to our events. Through the dance, the music, the art, the community we have created an exchange, a conversation, where some talk and some respond, others listen and all are heard. It has become a movement in motion.
Respect and love to everyone. Be sure to check out the Under the Lights page for pictures and videos from Saturday.
